Club History

In 1978 through the persistence of Kenny Dunne, John “Jessie” James and David Kenny, Parkville United A.F.C. came into existence. The club started playing football in 1978 playing in the Wicklow & District Football League with the club registering as “Paulville United AFC” only for the WDFL to approve their affiliation as “Parkville United AFC”, the clerical error stuck and so the club began its new existence as “Parkville United AFC” with clubs colours of Red and Black. The club were successful while playing in Wicklow from 1978 to 1987 with a league and cup double in their very 1st season and various other honours for the 1st and 2nd team over this period of the clubs history.

The first playing surface of Parkville United A.F.C. was on farm land in Tankardstown owned by John James who was at that time a player and founder member of the club
As the club joined the Carlow and District football league in 1987 they moved pitches this time moving into Tullow to play on Tullow Hill.  Like a lot of Junior clubs Parkville United AFC seemed to be on the move every other season renting fields while on the lookout for a permanent home and the much needed funds to purchase available land.

The 1992/93 season saw Parkville United AFC along with Tullow Juveniles AFC relocate once again in Tankardstown, now at this stage many people were losing patience with all this moving around but while the club was playing in Tankardstown the committee members had struck a deal to buy 8.5 acres of quality land in the town which would eventually become the official home of both Parkville United A.F.C. and Tullow Juveniles A.F.C. and the envy of every football club in the league and surrounding areas.

Eventually both clubs amalgamated as Parkville United AFC with the club now fielding teams at Schoolboy/girls and Junior Level.

The club facilities now include 3 full size pitches, a full size training pitch, 2 large dressing rooms, toilets, showers, meeting room/dressing room, kitchen and large car park. The club are the proud owners of their facilities having fundraised from day one of purchasing the land and now all money raised through the club lotto etc. goes back into the club, pitch maintenance, coach education and all that goes with running a successful community club.

Pitches have been developed and are up to a very high standard especially the Premier Pitch which is mainly used by Parkville United AFC’s premier team, and is the envy of every football club in the league. The clubs facilities are always open with both the Carlow & District Juveniles League and the Carlow and District Football League using the facilities for league representative games and cup finals.

The FAI are also regular users of the clubs facilities with Parkville United AFC hosting the FAI Summer Soccer Schools programme since 2000, FAI Coach Education since 2005.
